Progression that doesn't turn into a chore

Progression that doesn't turn into a chore

Leveling up should feel like a reward, not a tax. A lot of mobile games forget this and bury the fun behind hours of identical fights.

The trick the good ones use is to tie progression to new abilities, not just bigger numbers. When a level-up actually changes how I play — a new skill, a new build option — I'm motivated. When it only means my sword does 12% more damage, I check out.

Ironhold Command does this well in a strategy context: each tech unlock opens a genuinely new defensive option rather than just padding your stats. You plan differently after every upgrade.

My rule of thumb when trying a new game: if after an hour the only thing that's changed is the numbers, I move on. If my options have grown, I stay. Try applying that filter — it saves a lot of wasted evenings.
