Tilt or touch? The eternal mobile racer debate

Tilt or touch? The eternal mobile racer debate

April 7, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

Every mobile racer offers tilt steering and touch steering, and everyone has strong opinions. So we actually sat down and tested both properly across a few games.

Tilt feels more natural at first and great for gentle curves, but it falls apart on a bumpy tram or when you shift position on the sofa. Your steering input depends on how you're holding the phone, which is a problem the moment you move.

Touch controls are less intuitive but far more consistent. In Neon Drift Rally I was noticeably faster and more precise on touch once I'd adjusted, especially through the tight drift corners the game is built around.

My verdict: learn touch. It takes a day to get used to and then it's better in almost every situation. Keep tilt for the couch if you really prefer it, but don't expect to set your best times with it.
